Quick Answer

To attach a quilt info label, write your details with a fabric gel pen first, then sew the label into a back corner using a small whipstitch or a narrow zigzag on your machine. Keep the label flat and centered to avoid puckering.

Choosing Your Label Position

Place your label in a bottom corner on the quilt back so it's easy to spot but not in the way. Avoid the exact center or a busy seam intersection, as that can make the label buckle.

Write Before You Sew

Always fill in the quilt info before attaching the label. Fabric gel pens, like the one recommended for our labels, write smoothly on organic cotton and dry permanently. If you sew first, you may struggle to write neatly on a puffy quilt surface.

How to Attach Your Quilt Info Label – Step by Step

  1. Step 1: Write the Label Info: Use a fabric gel pen to write the quilt name, date, and any personal message on the organic cotton label. Let the ink dry completely (2–3 minutes). Avoid ballpoint or regular ink pens—they may smear or fade. A fabric gel pen is permanent.
  2. Step 2: Pin the Label in Place: Fold under the raw edges of the label about 0.25 inches and pin it to the quilt back at your chosen corner. Use safety pins or thin quilting pins to keep the label from shifting. Common mistake: not folding the edges can lead to fraying. Also, avoid over-pinning; two pins at opposite corners are enough.
  3. Step 3: Sew the Label On: With a needle and thread or a sewing machine, stitch around the label close to the edge (1/8 inch). A whipstitch by hand gives a near-invisible finish; a narrow zigzag on the machine adds strength. Do not stretch the label while sewing—it will pucker. If using a machine, disengage the feed dogs or use a walking foot for even feed.
  4. Step 4: Remove Pins and Press: Take out all pins and press the label gently with a warm iron (no steam) to flatten any wrinkles. Avoid pressing directly on the written area if the ink feels tacky. Skipping the press can leave the label bumpy. If the ink smears, let it air-dry for an hour before pressing on the wrong side.
